Ankle sprains are very common, but many people are surprised to learn how often they happen again. This large review looked at whether doing specific rehabilitation exercises after an ankle sprain actually helps prevent future sprains.
What the Study Found
● People who completed an exercise-based rehab programme were less likely to re-sprain their ankle than those who rested or received usual care only.
● Over 12 months, rehab exercises reduced the risk of another ankle sprain by around 40%.
● Exercises were safe and did not increase the risk of further injury.
● No single “perfect” exercise programme was identified, but balance, control and strengthening exercises were common across successful plans.
What This Means for You
If you’ve sprained your ankle:
● Rest alone isn’t enough – exercise is key to long-term recovery
● Rehab helps restore strength, balance and confidence in the ankle
● Doing exercises reduces the chance of developing ongoing instability or repeat sprains
● Even a simple, well-guided programme can make a meaningful difference
This is especially important if you play sport, walk a lot, or have sprained your ankle before.
Takeaway
An ankle sprain isn’t “just a sprain”. Completing a proper rehabilitation programme gives your ankle the best chance to heal properly and stay strong in the long term. Guided exercises are one of the most effective ways to protect yourself from future injuries.
